ARNE HOFMANN ON THE „INTERRELATION BETWEEN ARCHITECTURE AND STRUCTURE” AT SHARE FORUM 2017 BUCHAREST

The architect Arne Hofmann, managing director at Bollinger + Grohmann (B + G engineers) in Vienna, is a guest speaker at SHARE Forum 2017 in Bucharet on 21-22 March, where he will have a presentation on the Ilsan Auto Complex.

With an academic background in architecture, Arne Hofmann focused his career on the parametric design of spatial structures. He was involved in several research programs at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, such as “Algorithmic Generation of Complex Space Frames” and “Flexible Search in Parametric Design”. His activity at Bollinger + Grohmann involves collaboration with several architectural offices: Zaha Hadid Architects, for the Hungerburgbahn NEU in Innsbruck, Chalabi Architects, for the Sheik Zayed Desert Learning Center in Al Ain, with Dominique Perrault for the Vienna DC Towers,  Lengfeld Willish, for the Skylink Airail Center in  Frankfurt or for the Biennale Pavilion in Salzburg with SOMA Architects.

The engineering practice Arne Hofmann is mananging in Vienna focuses on creating inovative structures within an interdisciplinary planning team. The architect’s background aligns with the philosophy of B + G engineers, offering a bridge between architecture and structural engineering. The presentation he will be offering at SHARE Forum 2017 in Bucharest approaches this exact topic: the “Interrelation between Architecture and Structure”.

„In the last ten years a design shift can be seen, mostly pushed by the acceleration of speed towards the real time simulation of the load bearing behavior of many different structural solutions at once. By this and in combination with modern optimization algorithms and parametric modelling we were able to develop complex structures in tight cooperation with architects, merging architectural and structural design processes. This approach will be shown by a flying roof of an Automotive Flagship Store in Korea (Delugan Meissl Associated Architects, Vienna). In this project structure is not added to architecture afterwards, but grows in a cooperated computational process and negotiates between different functional, spatial and aesthetic criteria. This example shows concisely how the tools we are using and their underlying soft- and hardware development can change structural design fundamentally. Structural logic is not set up a priori, but embedded in a computational design process and goes along with the growth of structural capability”, declares B + G engineers.
